Novel Reading: Gulliver's Travels

Summary:

The novel I've chosen/read was "Gulliver's Travels" The main character in this story is called Gulliver. Gulliver is a married surgeon/doctor from Nottingham-shire, England. Gulliver was sent to Cambridge University so he was also well educated and trained. In this story the setting is in 1699 and it's about Gulliver starting a journey to different islands so maybe the setting is in some islands and on the sea. Gulliver learns a lot after going through different scenarios.

So, this story starts by having Gulliver going on a trip by a ship but during this trip there are several violent storms and he is brought to 4 different voyages. The first voyage was to a island called Liliput. This island Liliput was a island where the people who lived here were called Liliputians and they were only about six inches in height and were very small so Gulliver was treated as a giant and sometimes was called a "man mountain". In this island there was a problem between the Liliputians and the Blefuscudians which are their enemies that were from an island across the bay from them. Gulliver thought that it was meaningless to have a war so he tells the emperor of the Liliputians to bring peace but the emperor was dissatisfied that he couldn't have the support from Gulliver to attack their enemy so the emperor eventually starts to treat Gulliver without a heart/coldly. Gulliver knew it became awkward to stay in Liliput but then there suddenly came another chance to help the Liliputians and earn the respect that he had again. It was a huge fire in the palace, but he couldn't think of any smart plan to help so then he suddenly "makes water" to put out the fire. The palaces fire actually did disappear but the people from the palace were really disappointed and they were planning to take revenge on Gulliver cruelly even though he did it because he thought it would be help so Gulliver decides to escape to England with the boat he found in Blefuscu which was a actual sized boat that normal human beings can ride on. There are 3 more voyages Gulliver visits to which are also places where a lot of adventure is waiting.

The genre of this book is adventure and also could be fantasy. I thought it was both a adventure and a fantasy because this story has incredible  characters showing up and it's a adventure by having spectacular transportation.

A short passage that was interesting:

"I was hoping that perhaps human beings would change their ways after reading the stories of my life with the Houys .But they accuse me of lying in my book. And now I realize that people still lie, steal, and fight, just as they have always done, and probably will always do"

This is the passage which made me think that human beings have way to much pride. People are so consumed with themselves and how people look at them. The size of the people in the first two adventures is a major symbol of how much pride we have. We look down and underestimate when something is small and trying to feel like if you were god being admired by everyone.

Like or Hate:

I actually did enjoy the story until the half of the book which was until the voyage where giants lived. Why I only enjoyed reading half of the book was because the whole story seemed to be repetitive but still it was a good story that tried to tell us how much humans are concerned about themselves but not the other people around them. It made me think that maybe communism is actually a better society to have because capitalism makes some people left out.
I do recommend not only young people to read this but also some adults too.
